Inarguably, the F1 Grand Prix is one of the most exciting occurrences in Singapore’s annual calendar of events. Last year, the spectacular night race, held at the thrilling Marina Bay Street Circuit attracted an astounding 86,970 spectators daily, with a total of 260,912 spectators over the three-day weekend. Filled with music concerts, parallel racing events and whole lot of fun stuff, F1 at Singapore is one event that has to be experienced at least once in your lifetime. Here are seven tips to help you get the most out of your Singapore F1 Grand Prix weekend.
1.Plan a little ahead
It pays to plan a little ahead, especially at the Singapore Grand Prix. From buying your tickets early (they go on sale from April each year), to choosing the right ticket package (Grandstand, Walkabout or Combo), you will be better able to enjoy your F1 experience in Singapore if you plan ahead. There are also fabulous discounts on Early Bird tickets.
2. Make time for the music concerts
Music has always been given top priority at the Singapore Grand Prix, with famous international artists performing each year. This year’s headliners at the Padang Stage include Kylie Minogue, Queen + Adam Lambert, Imagine Dragons, Bastille and Halsey. Catch KC and The Sunshine Band and Pentatonix, as they perform on the Village Stage and the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.
3. Dress right and don’t forget to pack your earplugs
The Marina bay Circuit is located just 172km from the equator, so expect hot and humid climate with unexpected showers of rain. Dress in cool cotton clothes, carry a rain poncho and don’t forget your earplugs, because up close the sound of the cars can be surprisingly loud and earsplitting.
4. Take a ride on the flyer
The famous Singapore flyer (with the much needed air-conditioned pods) is located right in the middle of the circuit. And what’s more, your Grand Prix tickets give you unlimited free rides on the flyer. It offers a fantastic aerial view of the final turn of the track (right by the entrance to the pit lane) as well as the starting grid and finish line. So do take a ride and click some good aerial shots whilst you are up there.
5. Feast on gourmet food
If you have been to Singapore before, you will know that Singapore and food are inseparable. In addition to traditional Singaporean cuisine at Zone 1, get to sample tasty dishes from America, Australia, India, Italy, Middle East, Persia and more at the Hawker Village at Zone 4. Keep sufficient cash ready, as it works out much easier and faster than paying by card.
6. Don’t miss the fireworks
Special to the Singapore Night Race is the massive fireworks display that kicks off in front of the Marina Bay Sands hotel just as the chequered flag comes down. The best vantage point to catch the fireworks is in Zone 4 along the Esplanade Drive (the road just behind the Merlion statue). Leave the race a little early if you want some good shots of the fireworks.
7. Take home an F1 souvenir
As a special reminder to a wonderful weekend, do shop for exclusive Formula One team memorabilia for sale at the F1 Village (Zone 1 & Zone 4). Outside the Circuit Park, merchandise will also be available at selected World of Sports outlets. If you don’t wish to carry extra baggage, try getting a temporary airbrush tattoo, at the tattoo tents in Padang and Zone 1 (free for Grand Prix ticket holders).
